Gentlemen, many thanks for your inputs to my issue. Here are a few comments in response :
Sunrat – it seems that waiting will not result in a solution because MS decided to discontinue the repository and require users to install with Snap packages (see link above in the reply by Fabien),
Redgreen925 – the file that you cited was commented out some time ago, so this was not a solution for me,
Fabien – great to get your help again. The point about getting the deb package again was I assume completed when I un-installed then re-installed the whole SfL application. So it seems that this method will not work for me.
I have looked at the Skype for Web (SfW) service on various web sites, and it does appear that this will be a good way to go for me. However, SfW has been developed for Chrome browsers and I have used Firefox exclusively for some years. Now in 2024 apparently MS have made a system for FF, but I have not yet found how to get to it; MS seem to want me to enable Javascript.
If I cannot get SfW on FF, then I may be able to get it by installing the Brave browser (as it is Chrome-based.)
I shall continue to look for the FF solution, and report here later.
Gentlemen, many thanks indeed for your contributions, Tom.
