Beginners Questions • Re: [Networking] Mantaining and updating a HOSTS file

One thing to consider is that ad networks have gotten wise to domain-based ad blocking and have begun fronting their content behind other domains; CNAME cloaking. With this, it is easy for them to evade simple hosts based blocking.

uBlock Origin has a countermeasure against this, but it does generate a domain name lookup for every first and third party domain that a web page requests. So it's a bit of a trade off.
Wow... So the cat and mouse game has jumped to a new level. I have found a great paper here: "NextDNS CNAME Cloaking Blocklist".

I was trying to avoid the easiest solution: to copy the content of my 750Kb Windows HOSTS file into its Debian counterpart. To maintain a Hosts file isn't a perfect solution, but it's a layer of security I can't live without. I also installed uBlock Origin in Firefox as you suggested. BTW, I'm in love with Debian 12 and proud to be here. Thanks again.
