General Debian • Re: PLEASE HELP

I appreciate that switching to a new operating system can be a bit overwhelming, so here is some basic information you need.

Linux/GNU is not monolithic and includes many distributions and many different desktops, all with a different approach to providing a computing environment.

This provides great freedom of choice for users in both the nature of the desktop environment and how it is customised, according to their preferences in how a desktop should look and work, and level of experience or interest in customising the desktop environment.

There are different desktops available in different distributions, and their appearance may be different from distribution to distribution.

This freedom of choice may not work well for you if you chose a distribution whose desktop is not to your liking, or doesn't suit the way you expect or would like a desktop to work.

Gnome for example is minimalist and doesn't facilitate user customisation, because that is part of its philosophy about how a desktop should work. It is the default Debian desktop, but it may not be right for you (or you may not yet have appreciated its approach to the desktop - a lot of people do not and can not). Other desktop environments are available with different philosophies about how a desktop should work and paradigms of working.

These desktop environments may also have different display managers which handle the lock screen, and may have more easily available customisation options.

There are many videos available on YouTube exploring the differences between desktops both within and between distributions. It might be worth taking a look at some of those.

If you are using the default Debian desktop Gnome, it is worth noting that there are third-party apps available for those who prefer easier customisation options.

As has been mentioned, you need to state the desktop environment you are using.

Some more advice about asking questions: the topic title should indicate the issue/question, for example "How can I change the lock screen background in Gnome?". Separate questions should be asked in separate topics.

You may well find that questions like the ones you have asked have been asked before, so a forum search may well already provide the answer, although I appreciate that new users may be unaware of the different desktop environment and desktop manager options available in Debian, so may not have the knowledge to formulated the right question, which is why I have written this rather long post. I hope it is helpful to you and others.
