As you have discovered the problem using it is the damn thing is broken piece of garbage. That it has not been fixed over a year after being discovered and reported is disgusting beyond belief. Hardly the actions of a distribution that cares about it users as they claim to allow that to have continued for this long. The security repository is for critical security bugs that have been discovered this is where all those fixed packages end up for installing onto your system. Which means it is of major importance to have enabled. Thanks for the replies!
It ships with Debian as standard, why is it wrong to use it?
I'm not sure what exactly comes from deb.debian.org/debian-security but it sounds important, and will break for anyone trying to change mirrors with the obvious-tool-to-use that comes preinstalled. If you hit Super and type "repo" it's the first one to come up.
The installer sources.list works just fine. It's when you try to change the repo to anything in software-properties-gtk that apt update breaks.
Surely this is a bug and should be fixed?
