Hello,
[..] My question is therefore: what is the username and password for this instance?
According to "Cloud - Debian Wiki - FAQ" [1]:
FAQ

What is the default user name on the Debian cloud images?

A. The default user name differs based on the cloud environment. Please see https://wiki.debian.org/Cloud/SystemsComparison for more information. Authentication is via the ssh key installed by cloud-init. There is no password. These accounts may become root by running (no password required):

Code:

sudo -i
According to "Amazon/EC2/FAQ" [2]:
Q: What is cloud-init?

A: Cloud-init is a framework written in Python configuring various aspects of a newly instantiated EC2 instance. Refer to its documentation for more details. Cloud-init is installed by default on the Debian AMIs, as well as AMIs published by several other Linux distributions including Ubuntu and Amazon Linux.
You can refer to "cloud-init 23.4.1 documentation" [3] for more details; for example:Hope this helps.

Please report back.

Note: I would suggest to update the subject for the discussion to make it more informative for other users; for example from:
  • "[Installation] Debian qcow2 on KVM"
to:
  • "[Installation] Debian cloud qcow2 image with QEMU/KVM"
