Obviously it was a fake. It showed 16TB intermittently when I managed to get it recognised, but was not writeable. We tried it in Debian, Win 10, and Mac. Curiously, Win 10 was happy to format it with NTFS and write a small text file to it, but it still didn't work in the other 2 OS. He won't be making that mistake again.
