For the record, [...] the room I am in has a single network plug and I split it in two 100baseT [..] I prefer not to add an additional switch since the overall internet speed is below 100Mbps.

How did you "split" the network plug at hardware level ?

What if do you connect Debian directly to the network plug without "split" ?
