In grub under "Advanced options" there is a recovery mode. For this you need a root password.
Alternatively, when you do a normal boot, you could get a text console with <ctrl>+<alt>+<Fx> with Fx one of the function keys.
It could also work if you set in grub a kernel parameter to blackllist the nvidia driver, something like "module_blacklist=nvidia"
