General Debian • Re: Debian on family computers

My idea with Debian Junior Desktop is to provide a small Debian system for children and parents as well. They should be able to feel the spirit of "Free Software" and be able to learn Debian. Currently, it's like a prototype. I choose a set of applications where I think they should be fine. Debian Junior Desktop may grow along with my kids and feedback of users. ;-) I will watch this thread and I'm happy about feedback.
I think many parents will be interested in this project. The biggest advantage of using Debian, or Linux in general but more so for Debian users, is that it can be customized into a live-usb, and re-distributed. Debian's live build is a great tool but it can get complicated even for experienced users.

There is another approach in Debian that allows ordinary folks like myself to easily build customized live-usb. This is somewhat explained in a separate forum entitled "Immutable Bookworm". Basically it involves starting with a stock Debian live-usb (such as your Debian Junior--we are using Debian GNOME). Run it and make modifications just like any Debian user would with an installed system (including upgrading from Testing to Sid for our case). Save the changes (which has been stored, sua sponte, in RAM) to an external folder. Then merge the changes with the original to form a new live-usb. We have been using this approach for our pro bono Linux workshop for years. Pretty straightforward. Our forum members should have no problem modifying your Debian Jr to both make contributions and/or establish a new live-usb for different age groups and purposes.

Again, thanks a lot for your efforts.
