Thanks, TiberiusKG. I've tried your suggestion, but no luck. Audacity's available playback devices are [1] HDA Intel PCH: HDMI 0 (hw:0.3), [2] HDA Intel PCH: HDMI 1 (hw:0.7), [3] HDA Intel PCH: HDMI 2 (hw:0.8), [4] HDA Nvidia: HDMI 0 (hw:1.3), [5] HDA Nvidia: HDMI 1 (hw:1.7), [6] HDA Nvidia: HDMI 2 (hw:1.8), [7] HDA Nvidia: HDMI 3 (hw:1.9), [8] hdmi, [9] pipewire, [10] pulse, [11] default (default seems to just be pipewire again).
All of them produce a bouncing playback-level meter in the Audacity window. pipewire and default are the only ones that cause pavucontrol to show 2 items in the Playback tab: (1) System Sounds and (2) Pipewire ALSA [audacity]: ALSA Playback (these are the two that we see when successfully playing sound with mpg123; mpg123 shows a bouncing level meter underneath that is missing when playing Audacity). With all of the other choices (i.e., the HDA entries, hdmi, and pulse) in Audacity's playback devices, pavucontrol shows only System Sounds in its Playback tab.
