I think that is the rihgt way to proceed. You first have to identify how identify the light.
I had a few years ago a laptop, which screen went pure wight when I started charging.
Then wrote this script:I mapped the script to one key.
Reguires xbacklight, but as such you need more, as that was to whole screen
EDIT: did a web searhc 'linux power led' and yielded a bunch of sites that may help you.
