Many error messages can be found the journal, which can be made to persist across boots. Man journalctl should tell you syntax for using it from live boot. If /var/log/journal/ exists, persistent journal exists. Technically, /etc/systemd/journald.conf is supposed to control whether /var/log/journal/ exists, but I find it easier to simply create it than to understand what needs to be changed in journald.conf.
